14 submissions received for yacht marina, cruise liner terminal in Gozo

Fourteen submissions have been received by the government for the siting of a yacht marina and cruise liner terminal in Gozo.

The proposal is part of a pledge by the Labour government, made during the last general election.

The international call for expressions of interest for the cruise liner terminal and  yacht marina closed in September. No cruise liner facilities are available in Gozo other than a buoy for small cruise ships off Xlendi.

The government wants to attract small to medium-sized cruise liners. Though there is no preferred site for the project, proposals for Hondoq Ir-Rummien will not be considered due to the environmental impact. Marsalforn could have better potential for a yacht marina.

Are you serious? Marsalforn? Half of the Gozitans and thousands of tourists go swimming there everyday. If Hondoq, a small bay, has been dropped due to the environmental impact, Marsalforn should be a no starter. It would be the final nail in this unique bay. One should only look at the sea and the sea bed in Mgarr Gozo or Msida to understand what would happen to Marsalforn. Marsalforn is already facing problems with sewage overflow and rubbish and finds its way in the bay. A marina will stop any swimming in this bay for sure. I really hope it is just a suggestion. A yacht marina is important for Gozo but it should be situated at Imgarr and Marsalforn left as it is.
