23-year-old Maximilian Ciantar – who in 2010 was sentenced to jail after running over twin girls – was allegedly involved in another traffic accident in Hamrun, and was only arrested a few hours later in Qormi after fleeing the scene.

The incident happened early this afternoon in Hamrun, where eyewitnesses saw Ciantar crashing his vehicle into another car driven by a woman.

He was then seen threatening and insulting the driver and then fled before the police reached the scene.

Following an intensive search, the district police arrested Ciantar at his grandmother’s residence in Qormi. Upon being found, the man felt unwell and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital were he received treatment.

The vehicle he was driving yesterday has not been traced by the police. Inspector Robert Vella is leading the investigations.

Ciantar, who earlier this year had his driving licence suspended, will be charged of driving a vehicle illegally.

This is the not first time Ciantar has landed himself in hot water. In 2012 he was fined €800 after he was found in possession of heroin at Mater Dei Hospital.

In 2011 he was jailed for a month after a magistrate found him guilty of having threatened journalists. The journalists were reporting a court hearing which found Ciantar guilty of violating a court driving ban.

Twin sisters Sarah-Marie and Rebecca Falzon, were grieviously injured when they were run over by Ciantar as they crossed the road on a zebra crossing in Attard in April 2010.
