Acting Police Commissioner Ray Zammit has ordered an inquiry into allegations of bribery by a police officer in connection with alleged exploitation of workers by Chinese-owned company Leisure Clothing Ltd.

According to PN newspaper in-Nazzjon, an unnamed police officer would receive expensive clothes and other gifts in return for favours done to facilitate certain procedures. It is however understood that the same officer had nothing to do with the suspension of investigations into the same company a couple of months ago.

Reacting to the allegations, Zammit said “these were being taken with the utmost seriousness and an investigation has been ordered”.

The Acting Commissioner also said that he would not tolerate any actions – whether coming from within the Police Force or outside – that cast bad light on the MPF.

He also urged people to come forward with any information related to the case.

The team investigating allegations of human trafficking and exploitation of workers by Chinese-owned company Leisure Clothing have now started conducting a series of interviews with the factory’s workers.

On Thursday night, Bin Han, one of the directors of the company, was released from arrest by police with no charge after he was questioned over allegations of human trafficking on Wednesday.
He was however called in for questioning again this afternoon. MaltaToday understands that the Police uncovered new information.
