Rape suspect who escaped custody arrested in Qawra

A Guinean man suspected of committing rape was apprehended on Wednesday at 11pm in Qawra, police said,

The man, Seykou Bellde, 32, managed to escape from the St Julian’s police station on Monday evening after slipping out of loose handcuffs.

The suspect managed to run out of the back of the police station, which is at street level.

An internal police investigation is underway to determine how Ballde escaped police custody.

He had been arrested by two officers of the Rapid Intervention Unit who, while on patrol, heard a 27-year-old woman screaming and shouting. The incident happened at around 3:15am on Sunday in Paceville.

In a statement, the police said that Ballde escaped from the St Julian's police station while he was assisting the police with its investigations into the alleged rape case.
