The Plaza shopping complex and a McDonald’s outlet situated along the Tigne seafront have been evacuated after a bomb threat was made by an anonymous caller.

Police sources confirmed that at around 6:34pm, police received an anonymous phone call stating that there is a bomb at the McDonald’s outlet in Sliema. However, the caller did not specify which outlet, and as a result, both restaurants in Sliema were evacuated.

Within minutes, police from the Rapid Intervention Unit and district officials evacuated the outlets in Tigne Seafront and the Plaza Shopping Complex. Moreover, patrons at nearby restaurants and parishioners at the Jesus of Nazareth parish church were also evacuated.

Shoppers and employees at the Plaza shopping complex were also evacuated as a precaution.

The buildings have been evacuated while a search is being carried out by members of the police’s Explosives Ordinance Disposal as well as sniffer dogs.

Police investigations are ongoing.
