Girl awaiting trial for mum’s murder, jailed for heroin possession

21-year-old girl on bail awaiting trial for murder of mother back in 2008, remanded in custody

A 21-year-old girl who has been on bail awaiting trial in connection with the murder of her mother in 2008, has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to heroin possession.

The girl appeared before Magistrate Josette Demicoli accompanied by a male companion charged with heroin possession, breaching previous bail conditions, committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence and of relapsing.

Emotions were running high before the hearing and tears flowed freely down the cheeks of the accused and her male companion as they waited for the arrival of the magistrate.

The accused, who had also served time for theft, was on bail for the murder of her mother, Tereza Sciberras, in 2008.

Inspector Roderick Agius exhibited syringes that were found in the possession of the accused. He opposed bail given the accused’s criminal record and the fact that she was in breach of her bail conditions.

Magistrate Demicoli ordered the girl be remanded in custody, sentencing her to 3 months imprisonment for the drugs charge and ordering her to attend a rehabilitation programme.

In addition, the magistrate also ordered the deposit and personal guarantee for the accused's previous bail be confiscated on account of her breach of bail conditions.
