Jailed for damaging policeman's car - twice

The Somali man was also charged with being a recidivist and committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence

A Somali man was remanded in custody yesterdat after he was arraigned for attempting to break into a car belonging to a policeman.

Mohamed Haji Abdilwahid Nur, 35, currently residing at the Marsa Open Centre appeared before Magistrate Josette Demicoli charged with attempted theft from a vehicle in Triq is-Salib tal-Marsa, Marsa on the 14th December. He was also charged with damaging the same vehicle six days later, at the same location.

He is also charged with being a recidivist and committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence.

Nur, who is unemployed, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Inspector Sarah Magri, prosecuting, opposed bail citing the nature of the charges, the lack of a fixed address and the untrustworthy nature of the accused.

“We are talking about two separate incidents, where damages were caused to a car belonging to the same person. There are also eyewitnesses who are yet to testify and the fact that the accused has no fixed address makes him difficult to pin down,” the Inspector told the court.

The court after having heard submissions, deemed the accused untrustworthy and ordered he be remanded in custody.
