A court has once again granted bail to Gregorio Scicluna, who stands charged with shooting dead Joseph Caruana, the father of his estranged partner, in Kalkara in November 2013. Scicluna is also charged with the attempted murder of his former partner and their minor children.

Judge Antonio Mizzi granted Scicluna bail against a personal guarantee of €50,000 and a bond of €50,000. He also bound the accused to sign a bail book every day and placed him under a curfew.

It is understood that Scicluna plans to sell his home to fund the hefty deposit.

Scicluna had been already been granted bail in September, however this was subsequently revoked due to a procedural error and had to be reapplied for by the defence.

A magistrate then granted Scicluna bail against a deposit of €30,000 and a further personal guarantee of €30,000, after noting that all prosecution witnesses had been heard.

However the Attorney General had appealed against this decision, resulting in his bail being revoked again, after judge Michael Mallia had ruled that he was not trustworthy and that “society should be protected from such a character.”

Lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha are representing Scicluna.  Inspectors Keith Arnaud, Stephen Pullicino and Robert Said Sarreo are prosecuting.
