Finn pleads guilty to drunken Ghadira disturbance

23-year old Riku Markus Makinen was charged with threatening a police officer, causing slight bodily harm to two police officers and damaging a policeman’s uniform

A Finnish man, living in Ta’Xbiex, has been handed a suspended sentence and a fine of €950 after he admitted to causing slight injuries to two police officers whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli heard inspector Maurice Curmi charge the man, 23-year old Riku Markus Makinen, with threatening a police officer, causing slight bodily harm to two police officers and damaging a policeman’s uniform, in a sitting held this morning.

Makinen was also charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place and with breaching the peace.

The charges relate to an incident at Ghadira bay last Wednesday afternoon when police officers were called to deal with a report of a disturbance caused by a drunk and disorderly man. He was taken to the Qawra police station, but subsequently had to be taken to Mater Dei Hospital as he fell over in the lockup cell.

The court also ordered the Finn to pay €5 for the damaged uniform.

Lawyer Benjamin Valencia appeared on behalf of Makinen.
