Probation, community service for accused after ex-wife drops rape charges

Mohamed Ramadan had been charged with the rage of this former wife, holding her against her will, violent assault and causing her to fear violence would be used against her

A man who had been charged with raping his wife was ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service and put on probation after she dropped rape charges against him.

Mohamed Ramadan had been charged with the rage of this former wife, holding her against her will, violent assault and causing her to fear violence would be used against her. He had also been charged with relapsing and escaping from police custody.

The victim however dropped the rape and violent indecent assault accusations. Ramadan admitted to holding the woman against her will, escaping police custody and relapsing.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja said that an a prison sentence was ‘not ideal’ as the accused was raising young children, after his wife left Malta.

Rehabilitation and an integration programme, through probation and community work, would be more beneficial, the court said.

The court placed Ramadan on probation for a year and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of community service.

Police Inspector Sylvana Briffa prosecuted. Lawyer Jason Grima appeared for the accused.
