Explosion in Qrendi: 28-year-old in critical condition

A father and son have been injured in an explosion that took place this afternoon in a garage, limits of Qrendi.

The son, 28-year-old Alan Farrugia of Mqabba, suffered grievous injuries and is in critical condition. The father, 60-year-old Mario Farrugia, was hurt as well but was able to provide first assistance to his son who suffered burns in various parts of his body.

The father suffered slight injuries.

It is understood that the two were carrying out welding works on an iron mesh when the explosion took place.

Members of the Civil Protection Department, paramedics and police officers rushed on site.

Police investigation is underway while a magisterial inquiry has been appointed.
