Community work for maid who stole jewellery from employers

A maid was ordered to carry out 300 hours of community work after admitting to robbing jewellery from residences in Sliema and Msida. 

A maid was ordered to carry out 300 hours of community work after she admitted in court to stealing jewellery items from residences she had worked in.

The maid, whose name cannot be published by court order, was also made to refund her victims €1,800 for the jewellery she had stolen.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja heard how the maid had stolen a gold coin, a wedding ring, two diamond pendants, two silver rings, a gold necklace and a gold ring mounted with a silver stone from a Sliema apartment.

She also admitting to stealing a gold bracelet from another Sliema apartment and a gold ring from a Msida residence.

The court heard how she was caught in the act during one of her robberies. When she was arrested and interrogated by the police, the maid broke down in tears and admitted to the three thefts.  

He heard how the maid had separated from her husband at a young age and had to raise her young son by herself   

In his decree, Bugeja decided not to jail the maid on the grounds that she had admitted to the thefts, cooperated with the police, had a clean criminal record, and had already returned the ring to the Msida household.
