A Ghanaian man who entered Malta using a fake Italian passport was handed a 12-month imprisonment sentence suspended for two years.

Samuel Attah, 23, of Ghana, admitted to having used the Italian passport to come to Malta. The man, who was arrested yesterday shortly after arriving in Malta on a Air Malta flight from Rome, told police that he came to Malta for work.

The man cooperated with the police and admitted the charges, but did not anyone when asked who had procured the passport.

The prosecution and the defence agreed that the Ghanaian be handed a suspended sentence so he returns to Ghana.

The request was upheld by presiding Magistrate Audrey Demicoli who handed the accused a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years.

Police inspector Darren Buhagiar prosecuted, while Lawyer Noel Cutajar was legal aid.
