Driving wrong way leads to drug arrest

One man's bad driving led to him being remanded in custody on heroin trafficking charges today.

39-year-old Jason Caruana from Floriana was arrested after driving the wrong way up a one-way street in Valletta (St. Christopher street). Police, who had stopped the car for doing so noticed that Caruana started behaving suspiciously, which prompted the officers to search the car where the drugs were found.

Inspector Priscilla Caruana Lee charged Caruana with possession of heroin and with trafficking the potentially lethal opiate. He was also accused of possession of cannabis resin, contravening a no entry sign, carrying a knuckleduster and relapsing.

Defence lawyer Charmaine Cherrett, told the court that the accused was unwell and battling psychological problems. She requested the court impose a provisional supervision order and to grant the man bail.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud did not uphold the request for bail, but accepted to impose a provisional treatment order in order to allow the man to receive the treatment he requires, sending instructions to this effect to the director of prisons.
