A 33-year-old man from Benghazi has been remanded in custody after he was arraigned under arrest on charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm on one man and slightly injuring another in a drunken fight in St Julian's last night.

Inspector Nikolai Sant presented Gzira resident Mohammed Mahdi Mahdi under arrest before magistrate Claire-Louise Stafrace this afternoon.

Mahdi, who appeared with butterfly stitches over corner of left eye, was charged with grievously injuring Lui Antonio Benedicto Rios, slightly injuring Paulis Lauga, being drunk and incapable of taking care of himself in public, breaching the peace and relapsing.

Mehdi, who is unemployed and living off social benefits, told the court that when he didn't have enough money for rent, he would go stay at the Marsa Open Center.

He was unable to recall the incident, he said, because he had mixed medicinals with alcohol.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino entered a plea of not guilty.

Bail was not requested as the man had no fixed address.
