A man from Safi has been released on bail this afternoon after pleading not guilty to grievously injuring his wife in a domestic dispute.

Inspector Charlotte Curmi arraigned the 37-year-old mechanic before magistrate Anthony Vella earlier today, accusing him of attacking the woman, causing her permanent facial scarring, threatening her and failing to obey bail conditions imposed in an unconnected case.

During questioning the man had told the police that he had been asleep with his four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son when he heard somebody kicking the door. It was his wife, demanding to pick up some clothes of hers, he had explained to officers.

The two ended up brawling when the man had tried to throw the female out of the house, which the woman insisted was hers. After allegedly scratching the man's face, the woman ended up on the ground, pushed over by her former partner.

The man's defence counsel, lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia, requested bail. This was granted against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €2,500. A protection order was issued in favour of the woman.
