A greengrocer's employee who ransacked the shop's till has been jailed for a total of 27 months after he admitted to leaving the shop's window open so he could return and rob it.

Antonio Adolfo, 48, from Italy, pleaded guilty to having stolen cash and cheques from the Valletta greengrocer where he worked, during the night of 8 March.

During his arraignment before magistrate Josette Demicoli this morning, Adolfo initially said that he could not remember what happened, but chose to plead guilty after consulting with his lawyer.

Prosecuting police inspector Daryl Borg explained that the man had left a window open at his workplace, which he used to gain access to the establishment when he returned to rob it that night.

In so doing, Adolfo also breached the conditions of a suspended sentence which he had been handed by magistrate Francesco Depasquale in September last year. On that occasion he had been handed a six-month jail term, suspended for four years, together with a €1,000 fine for importing and possessing cannabis.

The punishment for that sentence was added to the 21 month sentence he was handed this morning for the green grocer burglary, bringing the man's total jail time to 27 months.
