Lisa May Camilleri, whose estranged husband spent 14 months behind bars in 2012 after being convicted of defiling his daughter, on the strength of false testimony that she allegedly instigated, has appeared in court again today charged with breaching her bail conditions.

47-year-old Camilleri is on bail awaiting trial after being indicted for perjury after allegedly instigating her daughter, Leanne, to falsely testify that her father had raped her as a child. The man was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in 2011 and his sentence was confirmed on appeal two years later.

However, in May 2014, both Leanne and Lisa May Camilleri were charged with criminal offences relating to perjury and false oaths after doctors confirmed the girl was still a virgin. The father, Emanuel Camilleri, was eventually exonerated and struck of the sex offenders register last year.

In September 2014, Camilleri's daughter was handed a three-year probation order and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service for her part in the crime.

No details about the breach of bail conditions emerged in court this morning, but this is not Camilleri's first time in the dock on similar charges. In November 2014, a court turned down a request by the prosecution to revoke the woman's bail, after she asked about her estranged husband's workmates about his whereabouts. On that occasion, although the court held that she had not technically breached her bail conditions, she was “nevertheless treading on thin ice.”

Camilleri pleaded guilty to the charges this morning but in spite of this, was not sentenced to prison. Magistrate Claire Louise Stafrace, in view of Camilleri's guilty plea, handed the woman a four-year prison sentence suspended for one year, fined her €100 and ordered the confiscation of her €5,000 personal guarantee.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo appeared for the defendant. Inspector James Grech prosecuted.
