A woman has been remanded in custody after being charged with fraud and conspiracy to steal.

Gleiciane Lino Achaval, 32, of Brazil, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to steal her partner's bank cards over the past months. She was also charged with receiving stolen goods and making fraudulent gains.

Presiding magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit heard how Achaval’s partner had filed a police report alleging that funds were being withdrawn from his account without his authorisation. It was estimated that about €40,000 had been withdrawn.

Prosecuting police inspector Trevor Micallef told the court how CCTV from the bank showed Achaval carrying out the unauthorised transactions in the company of a third party.

Lawyer Martin Fenech, appearing for the accused, entered a request for bail.

However, the court denied the request, arguing that the woman’s partner was yet to testify in the case against her.
