A man was found dead in a jeep underwater at the zone known as Tal-Maghluq in Marsaxlokk on Friday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as John Zahra, a 36-year-old man from Birzebbuga.

Zahra was last seen on Wednesday, drinking with his friends at the San Girgor feast in Marsaxlokk, state broadcaster TVM reported.

He hadn’t returned home that night, prompting his family to file a missing person report.

Police said in a statement on Friday night that they, assisted by AFM drivers, carried out an inspection on site at around 2pm, after receiving a report that a Toyota Landcruiser was in the sea.

A crane was used to hoist the jeep out of the sea and the corpse was taken to Mater Dei’s morgue by hearse.

A magisterial inquiry, led by Grezzio Mercieca, is being held.
