A fire broke out at an old people’s home in Buġibba Monday evening. Witnesses on site described a chaotic scene in Triq it-Turisti after the fire broke out in the Casa San Paola at around 6.50pm.

An evacuation of the home’s residents was immediately carried out, with those evacuated being taken to the Qawra parish church.

The home is run by CareMalta.

The company said that the fire broke out in the laundry room at around 6:45pm, which created a lot of smoke passing through a number of the home’s levels.

The Civil Protection Department was called on site to control the flames, while the home’s tenants were evacuated to the parish church by staff members and other employees from other CareMalta homes.

Nobody was injured in the incident, but one of the residents was taken to Mater Dei Hospital to be kept under observation. The resident returned back to the home that same night.

Some staff members were given First Aid due to smoke inhalation. The majority of residents were returned to their rooms after the CPD certified that the home was clear of danger.

Another 40 residents were placed in three different homes since one of the home’s levels had been worse affected by the smoke.
