Updated | Man charged with assaulting detention officer at Marsa Open Centre

A 32-year-old man has been charged in court with assaulting a detention officer near the Marsa Open Centre this morning.

The court, presided over by magistrate Audrey Demicoli, heard how Mahad Ali Mohamud had assaulted 61-year-old George Veneziani at Xatt il-Mollijiet at around 12:30am, breaking the officer’s nose in the process.

Mohamud refused to give his particulars in court, but his legal aid Joe Ellis pleaded not guilty on his behalf.

There was no request for bail, meaning that the man is being kept under arrest.
