Drunk England supporter misses match after naked balcony performance

Charles Ben Overton travelled all the way to Malta to watch yesterday's Malta vs England football game but ended up spending the night in the police lockup after an alcohol-fuelled incident in St.Julian's yesterday afternoon

A spot of drunken exhibitionism has landed one football fan in trouble with the law and caused him to miss the match he travelled all the way to Malta to see.

Charles Ben Overton from Hull in the UK was arraigned before magistrate Joseph Mifsud this morning after going out onto the balcony of his St. Julian’s hotel room naked yesterday afternoon, making noise to attract the attention of passers-by.

21 year-old Overton, who appeared in court still wearing his England football shirt, had come to Malta to watch the international football match between Malta and England but ended up spending the night in the police lockup instead.

The man, who told the court that he was due to fly home on Monday, pleaded guilty to charges of offending public morals and others relating to public nudity.

“I’m going to conditionally discharge you for a year,” said the magistrate. “Don’t do anything illegal before you leave the island,” he warned.

The embarrassed man was heard apologising for his actions as he left the courtroom.

Inspector Nikolai Sant prosecuted, lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar was legal aid.
