Two Bulgarian pick-pocketers were this morning arrested after being caught red-handed by police in Tas-Sliema, according to a statement released by the police communications unit this evening.

The two women, one aged 23 and the second aged 36 are expected to be charged in court tomorrow.

It said that after reports of pick-pocketing in a number of localities around Tas-Sliema and St Julian’s, particularly on public transport and busy bus stops, the police started to investigate. Investigations, said the police, were intensified in recent days, leading to a number of Bulgarian and Romanian nationals being observed by the police.

“In a timely intervention by the police at around 11 o’clock, two Bulgarian women were seen stealing a purse from a woman’s bag as she was waiting on the bus stop in Triq it-Torri, Tas-Sliema,” said the police in a statement.

It added that one of the women was observed acting as a “spotter” while the second woman was seen stealing the purse.

Finally, the police said that investigations and an increased frequency of patrols in popular areas were taking place in order to clamp down on this sort of crime.
