Homeless youth denied bail after attacking woman

A homeless 19-year-old man has been remanded in custody, after attacking a woman who had given him shelter and scuffling with the police when she kicked him out

Alex Junior Mamo was arraigned under arrest before magistrate Gabriella Vella this morning, on charges pertaining to having violently resisted the police, threatening the woman and breaching the public peace.

Inspector Charlotte Curmi told the court that the man had nowhere to live and had been taken in by the woman. However, after a number of arguments, she had told him he was no longer welcome to stay.

She then asked the police to be there when he collected his belongings. When he arrived, he burst open the door and an argument ensued. He then allegedly punched the police sergeant, breaking his glasses.

Inspector Curmi added that the accused had admitted to losing control when angry, as she had questioned him.

“Even whilst I was questioning him, he told me to stop because he was getting angry”.

Lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar, who was appointed as legal aid to the accused, entered a plea of not guilty.

Bail was not requested as the accused had no fixed address..
