A man from Ghana has been conditionally discharged and ordered to be sent back to Italy within the space of one week after pleading guilty to having grievously injured a friend.

Ghana-born Kofi Nimoh, 57, who lives in Italy, had allegedly come over to Malta to visit his friend. However, on 23 October at around 8pm , inside an apartment in St Paul's Bay, an argument broke out between the two. As the row escalated, physical violence was involved and the victim ended up suffering serious injuries.

Asked by duty magistrate Joe Mifsud whether he regretted his wrongdoing, the accused became visibly emotional prompting the court to observe that this had indeed been an unfortunate incident which got out of control.

Upon the man’s own admission, the court conditionally discharged him for three years and ordered that he be sent back to Italy within seven days, with the court placing the responsibility on the prosecuting officer tto ensure the accused left Malta within the week.

Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted while lawyer Josette Sultana assisted the accused as legal aid.
