PN deputy leaders Beppe Fenech Adami and Mario de Marco have conceded defeat, telling the press in the counting hall that the party must now analyse the damning result and look forward.

Fenech Adami thanked the people who helped the PN in the past five weeks and who turned out to vote, and said the party must now look to the future.

“We must analyse the result and look to the future, so that the Nationalist Party can continue to progress,” he said.

A visibly emotional Mario de Marco said that good governance and the rule of law, key planks of the PN’s election battle-cry, remain important issues despite the crushing defeat.

“I thank people for the high turnout, and we must now look forward to the future. I urge supporters of both sides to keep calm and show that political maturity reigns in this country,” he said. “People will celebrate, but everyone should respect each other. We must realize that, at the end of the day, we are one nation and we must respect people with differing opinions.”
