Following Lawrence Gonzi's resignation from parliament, former Nationalist MP Anthony Abela submitted his nomination for the casual election.

So far, Abela has been the only one to submit the nomination.

Nominations will close on Friday and a casual election will be held on 30 July.

Abela, a notary by profession, served as parliamentary secretary in charge of defence between 2003 and 2008 under the Gonzi administration.

Abela is the son of former Nationalist MP Sammy Abela.

And Dr Gonzi told us that he was vacating his seat to make room for better and younger stuff. If this is what the PN has to offer as his (Gonzi's) replacement, I am sorry that the PN is in a much worse and pathetic situation than the nazzjonalist would want to admit. I am sure that it would make more political sense if the PN had to leave that parliamentary seat vacant.
