PN MEP helps complete report on fight against human trafficking

Therese Comodini Cachia urges multinational corporations to help combat human trafficking

A report on how to combat human trafficking, of which PN MEP Therese Comodini Cachia was a shadow rapporteur, has been adopted by the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee.

The report urges the EU to develop a targetted anti-trafficking strategy that takes into consideration the vulnerability of people who fall victims to traffickers.

“The EU needs to sharpen its external relations to ensure that criminal networks involved in human trafficking are brought to justice,” Comodini Cachia said following the committee’s decision to adopt the report. “Effective cooperation within the EU, with relevant stakeholders such as national NGOs and international organisations and with third countries is needed to combat and prevent human trafficking.

She added that multinational corporations have a role to play in ensuring that businesses combat human trafficking.

“Unless we seriously address situations in third countries that give rise to trafficked victims entering the EU, we will not be able to strengthen measures that are now taken to combat trafficking within the EU,” she said.
