UK petition for second Brexit referendum reaches over one million signatures

Parliamentary petition calls for a second referendum

A UK petition calling for a second Brexit referendum had reached 1,097,764 signatures by Saturday morning, 12:23.

The UK parliament considers all petitions that get more than 100,000 signatures for a debate.

“We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based a turnout less than 75% there should be another referendum,” the petition reads.

As the United Kingdom, the European Union and the rest of the world attempted to come to terms with the result of the Brexit referendum, Ukip leader Nigel Farage disowned a pledge to spend £350 million of European Union cash on the NHS.

The Ukip leader was asked on ITV’s Good Morning Britain programme whether he would guarantee that the money pledged for the health service would be honoured.

“No I can’t [guarantee it], and I would never have made that claim. That was one of the mistakes that I think the Leave campaign made,” Farage said.

The Vote Leave campaign splashed the pledge onto the side of a tour bus used to travel around the country.

“It wasn’t one of my adverts – I can assure you! I think they made a mistake in doing that,” Farage, who has been more closely associated with the Leave.EU campaign, said.

“We have a £10 billion, £34 million a day featherbed, that is going to be free money that we can spend on the NHS, on schools, on whatever it is."

The Leave campaigners also targeted people concerned about immigration and, as Bloomberg reports, “Brexit leaders prepare to disappoint supporters on migration”.

“I want to speak directly to the millions of people who did not vote for this outcome, especially young people, who may feel that this decision in some way involves pulling up a drawbridge,” former London mayor Boris Johnson said. “I think the very opposite is true. We can control our own borders in a way that is not discriminatory but fair and balanced, and take the wind out of the sails of the extremists and those who would play politics with immigration.”
