Guidelines for Brexit negotiations discussed at summit of Southern EU states

A set of guidelines that will be adopted during Brexit negotiations in Brussels next month, have been agreed upon by Southern European member states, according to a statement by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The agreement was reached during a summit of Southern European member states that was attended by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, it said.  

The summit includes the heads of state of Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain and Malta.

At the start of the meeting, Muscat gave a presentation to the other government leaders where he outlined progress being made during the Maltese Presidency, as well as the current Brexit situation, specifically, on Brexit guidelines that were presented in Malta last month.

Muscat stressed the importance of unity among the 27 member states, adding that the agreement must be a just one that safeguards the interests of European citizens.

“The meeting proceeded to discuss other issues such as the future of Europe and the idea of a multi-speed Europe, in order to reach compromises that are suitable for all,” read an OPM statement.

Moreover, it said the leaders discussed the situation in Syria, condemning the chemical attacks taking place in Idlib.

“The leaders also discussed sectors of importance to the Mediterranean, such as immigration, as well as the need for security and a more social Europe, especially in light of terrorist attacks in Russia, Sweden and Egypt,” concluded the statement.
