Judge David Scicluna has held that a request to withdraw part of a bail deposit, even in a murder case, was a civil matter and beyond the remit of the Criminal Court.

Mona Camilleri, wife of Mario Camilleri known as l-Imniehru had claimed that the €30,000 deposited in court by her brother Jason Galea, as bail money came from a cleaning business in which they were partners.

Camilleri claimed that half the money was hers and she therefore requested the court to order its return.

The court, however ruled that this was a civil matter and the criminal court was not the correct forum in which to make this request.

Jason Galea is charged with the murder of Mario Camilleri and his 21-year-old son in 2013. He is also accused of the 2012 murder of taxi driver Matthew Zahra.

Galea had deposited €30,000 in cash for bail in the murder case.
