Court extends suspended sentence for man caught with heroin, flick knife

23-year old man's suspended sentence extended after court hears he was found in possession of heroin and prohibited weapon

A court has extended a man’s suspended sentence after it was told how he was found to be in possession of heroin and a prohibited weapon during a surprise police inspection.

Police Inspector Jason Sultana charged the 23-year-old man from Qormi with heroin possession and with carrying the four-inch flick knife without the requisite police licence.

Sultana told the court, presided over by magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona, how the man was seen acting suspiciously in Gzira when he noticed the police car was close by. Sultana told the court how, when approached by police officers, the man allegedly attempted to conceal the knife and drugs in his car but that the items were found after a brief search.

He pleaded guilty to all charges and was placed on probation for two years. A two-year suspended sentence which he had been handed in November 2014 was also extended by four years.

Lawyers Keith Borg and Carlos Bugeja appeared for the accused.
