Divorce bill | Committee agrees on extending 'adequate maintenance' for education even to united families

MPs have reached 'agreement' to extend the parental obligation of 'adequate maintenance' to children pursuing studies until the age of 23, even to non broken-down families.

The agreement was reached this morning as the parliamentary committee discussing amendments to the divorce bill in its third reading met on Sunday morning.

MPs consider the development as 'historic' for Maltese Civil Code.

So who voted NO for the No fault irresponsbile divorce was not stupid. Many on these blogs in past were saying we shall give a chance to everybody to have accses to Divorce now we have it. Now who will not have his adult son/daughter in custody will have to be a walking ATM, because if his son/daughter wants to opt to study in a foreign University, tell me how can he support the children from the first marriage and his new marriage. It didn't take long to prove that JPO and the Pl were all liars hunting for votes. The Divorce will be for the rich. Now stop crying and viva il-mazzun. Now this proposal came from a very big friend of the pl saint JPO and pl candidate Deborah Schembri

I hope that this proposal is discarded immediately. We voted in a referendum for the introduction of divorce. How come this is now being turned into legislation that will apply to people who are not divorcing!!!!

Who is the crazy politician or politicians who have come up with this idea? Why should a parent provide support up till age 23? Is this being done to finally remove stipends? PERHAPS THIS IS A WAY HOW TO PREVENT POOR PERSONS OR LOWER CLASS CITIZENS FROM DIVORCING!!! SHAME!!! SHAME!!! SHAME!!!

Not so sure out this one. Should'nt young adults be responsible enough to help support themselves through tertiary education? Why impose a law on parents making mandatory financing of what essentially is a character building phase of a young person's life...that of learning how to support him or herself and the meaning of sacrifies for a higher aim? I did it that way and have no repgrets in earning enough to pay for my education. It thought me to be independent. besides then such a requirement should not apply to divorcing parents but to ALL parents, even those in a stable marriage. This one I think, is going one too far.

I suggest that the EU commissioner be immediately informed of the stipend system and also this fracass. Why? because for qualifying for certain EU funding for higher education like STEPS it is specifically stated that students must not be receiving grants from other sources. It is unjustifiable to help certain groups of students to the detriment of others. That the age should rise from 18 to 23 does not make sense unless the stipend system is scrapped.

Re-inventing the wheel again are we? I see two possible consequences: 1. More mamma's boys and girls and consequently less preparation for real life. 2. The end of student stipends. The mind boggles.

I think it's a good move. The stipends system should also be kept for those who show that they are serious in their studies.

Yeah sure mollycoddle them even when adult..that makes sure they grow up to be responsible Citizens...not...and absolves the State of it's responsibility. Students should pay for their education unless it's in a field of which the Country is in dire need of expertise.

If this is the case then the STIPEND SYSTEM where students are being paid stipends for studying should be stopped. blocked with immediate effect. The EU commisioner should be informed about malta's unfair stipend system where students are getting paid for studying!!! Also it is unclear what does studying mean in this case? Are institutes and vocational institutes included in this?
