‘I should decide whether to contest the elections or not’ – Franco Debono

The Nationalist backbencher insists election ban should be revoked, 'I should decide whether to contest or not'

Karl Stagno-Navarra
29 July 2012, 12:00am
Backbencher Franco Debono
Backbencher Franco Debono has been holding several meetings with the Prime Minister to discuss the reforms he has proposed.

According to Debono, the two have been discussing several issues, including the proposed bill on party financing and the reform in the Police Corps.

In comments to Sunday newspaper Illum, Debono wouldn't comment on whether there were ongoing maneuverers within the party to revoke the PN's executive committee decision to ban him from contesting the elections.

He however insisted that the decision should be up to him and no one else.

"Whether to contest or not should be my decision. However, the PN should be wise enough to realise that I'm a victim of the political system in our country," Debono said.

He added that those who push for reforms end up facing closed doors.

Give us a break Franco. - In the beginning I thought you had the right stuff but at the end you ended up as we say in Maltese "Nar tat-tiben" - I think your political carrier is finished so please stop fooling yourself now and give us a break.

Mur aqbez Franco ...paroli fil vojt kont , adek u tibqa !!

Dear Franco, i agree with some of your comments, not all of them for sure. But then when it comes to the real action you open a mouth as big as a lion but then take a bite smaller than a mouse. Result........you are flippin useless and only just a nuisance. Not really about solving some problems but to push your own personal agenda. That's how history will remember you.
GRACE PAVIA
Dear Franco, you have one option left. Take a seat next to JPO and resign from the PN, inform the President and Speaker officially so they cannot sneak out, request the Speaker to reconvene Parliament, and via any of many options, vote the present power clique out. Do not stand for October 2012 elections this time round. Wait for the PN to regenerate itself and then rejoin at that stage.
Anthony Galea
It about time to tell the general public and decide if it is your interests that you care most about or realy those of the Nation. You have critice Austin and RCC Gatt but than did not have the guts to vote against them..or maybe you saw that you can earn something oif you do not vote against

Franco, you probably should run as you indicated. But your best bet is to run on an independent ticket and see how many votes you may get. If the people loved you, you will get reelected. But as a party, the PN does have the right to bar you from their ticket as you have created havoc with the current PN government. At the end it's all your choice. A party is not really a democracy in the sense of the word, but it has rules candidates must abide with and that includes the PL. Maltese parties and politicians have not reached the level of say American politics where politicians can freely vote their consciece and in the instrest of their constituents.
Saviour Cachia
Hon. Franco Debono is always free to decide whether to contest the next general election or not. He can do it on an independent ticket. Or does the votes he brought in the 2008 general elections got them for being a Nationalist Party candidate? If he got them on his own capacity nothing will keep him from contesting again, when he is so confident he enjoys such heavy support in his constituency. All we can do for the moment is just wait, Dr. Franco and what you going to do once a vote of Austin Gatt in the forthcoming budget.

Issa ma ghadux il-bad boy tafux dottor franco -- issa t-tuffieha mhassra sar jeffrey pullicino orlando - issa allura jsiru l-laqghat ma' gonzipn - u allura dak it-tghajjir kollu nsih gonzipn? You can. PN only has the authority to decide who contests on its ticket. The way I see it, the only way FD will get back on the PN ticket is for PN to lose spectacularly so that the klikka are have no choice to resign, and a thorough spring cleaning of the party, removing the gangrenous parts and rebuilding the party with the good bits.
Joe Borg
Dr. Debono - It is agreed that you have a right to decided whether or not to contest the elections but it is the absolute prerogative of the Nationalist Party to decide whether it should allow you to contest under its banner or not.
Mark Borg
L-istat tal-PN huwa tali li anki tapit ahmar se jaghmlulek Franco halli terga tikkontesta l-elezzjoni maghhom. Hawn xi hadd irid jilghab imhatra?
Noel Cutajar
Is he a new PN candidate?
Andrew Spiteri
Dont you worry Franco dear! teh Pn will surely revoke their descion and let you contest -ON CONDITION THAT YOU VOTE WITH THE GOVT IN PARLIAMNET!! When you do so and let Gonzi govern till the end- as as his obvious wish, his and nobody else's - they will work against you to ensure that you will be humiliated big time. If you are not sseing this scenario you are not as bright as you want eveyone to think. These poeple will use you and then throw you out like a piece of dirty toilet paper - ask your friend JPO!!! yes ofcourse they will let you contest...and you will be a fool to do so. But then You already showed what a fool you were when you abtstained in the vote agaisnt your nemsis Austin Gatt...and now you are surely losing sleep about that.
Christian Thorn
Just go INDEPENDENT Franco.... at least you 'd get consulted by Dr. Gonzi before every vote! Gonzi listend to Indpendents, HE MUST! Do it Franco do it, make an exit! You are not welcome @ the Dar Centrali anymore where RCC RULES ok!
Mario Attard
Dear Dr Franco Debono, I think you’re completly wrong. The World Leader (Dr Lawrence Gonzi) should decide what you should do and what you should not. Only Lawrence Gonzi can decide what everyone in Malta should and shouldn’t do. Probably if he is elected again, once a week instead of going to pray we will be asked to go Castille to bow and burn incense before the Great One, and if you don’t then you will be thrown into the arena to be fed to the lions, fight some Gladitor, or be crusified. I think that on your own you can still do it.
m borg
True Franco you decide if you contest or not, but the parties decide whom to let on their ticket. gonzipn has dumped you, PL would not even give a fraction of a second thought your only option is either AD or independent. Now simply shut up we have had enough of you.
Nigel Lawrence
Go ahead, stand for the elections. With your posturing, antics and credibility shown to be what it is, I don't think voters in the 5th will be looking in your direction. Get yourself some real balls, not the wet tissue paper you now have, and try again some other time
guido cutajar
Biex xi partit politiku ihallik tikkontesta l-elezzjoni fuq il biljett tieghu, irid ikun zgur li ser itella mill l-anqas 5 siggijiet aktar mill partit l-iehor, specjalment il partit nazzjonalista.L-importanti mhux li tikkontesta imma kemm ser jafdawk aktar. Qatt rajt hmar jitla l-arblu, daqshekk hija difficli ghalik li xi darba ser terga tidhol fil parlament ..(issa il gdid) bhala membru parlamentari.Ara li kieku qtajta mill l-ewwel forsi konna nehduk bis serjeta, imm issa kullhadd induna li int kull ma ridt tghamel huwa li A. Ghal xi raguni tpattija lil xi hadd fil PN u B. Bdejt tilghab tilaghab bis sentimenti tal poplu, anke b`tal laburisti.
briffy@maltanet
Franco..you would be right in saying that you should decide on whether to contest or not, if you were to contest as an independent. Isn't it obvious that if applying to contest elections on a party ticket, one has to be approved by the party?
lupus
Ara min hawn!? Dan ma qalx illi se jiehu ftit vaganzi??? U le...mela JPO qed jisraqlu il-lime light?

NO IT WILL NOT BE YOU TO CHOOSE TO CONTEST THE ELECTIONS. YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO DRIVE DOWN KARM MIFSUD BONNICI FROM MINISTRY,WHEN TIME COMES IT WILL BE KARM'S TURN TO TIT FOR TAT AND YOU HAVE NO CHANCE IF HE CONDITION HIMSELF IN CHOICE TO YOU. THE NATIONALIST PARTY UNANIMOUSLY WILL KICK YOU OUT AND WELCOME KARM .WHO ARE YOU TO THE GROSS LEGACY IN THE NATIONALIST PARTY? YOU ARE A BIG MOUTH THE GROSSES ARE THE ROOTS.
