Thunderstorm, whirlwind hit Maltese islands

A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds hit the Maltese islands this evening, causing damage to feast decorations in Sliema and Zurrieq, while a much awaited tomato fight in Fgura was cancelled after the wind destroyed a large plastic cage in which revellers were to pelt each other.

Outdoor feasts in Sliema and Zurrieq were cancelled and a tomato festival in Fgura was also cancelled after a violent thunderstorm hit the Maltese islands this evening, causing damage to street decorations, uprooted trees, lifted tents and other objects left on roofs.

Police and Civil Protection officials reported no injuries, but all units were dispatched across the island to assist residents who suffered unexpected flooding in basements, while traffic had to be diverted in many localities following a number of incidents due to skidding.

An Arriva bus reportedly lost control and skidded on the Mellieha hill blocking the road, while other accidents were reported in various localities.

In Birzebbugia, a waterspout was seen to have come onto the beach lifting umbrellas and small boats.

A meteo alert remains in place until tomorrow.
