Gainfully occupied increase by 1.4% in April
The NSO says the full-time gainfully occupied population in April reached 150,717, an increase of 1.4% over the same month last year.
Unemployed went up by 188, or 2.9% in April.
The National Statistics Office (NSO) said the full-time gainfully occupied population reached 150,717 in April 2012, an increase of 1.4% when compared to the corresponding month last year.
Data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) indicates that over a period of one year, persons registered as having a full-time job increased by 2,103, or 1.4%.
Meanwhile, the registered unemployed went up by 188, or 2.9%. As a result, the labour supply during the period increased by 1.5%, reaching 157,490 persons.
Compared to April 2011, increases in full-time employment were mainly registered in the health and social work sector ( 523) and administrative and support service activities ( 484).
On the other hand, full-time employment in construction declined by 277 persons, or 2.2%.
When compared to April 2011, employment in the private sector increased by 2.4%, with the highest increase being recorded in the transport and storage sector - 10.8%.
On the other hand, employment in the public sector declined by 1.2% to 40,733.
Female employment increased by 3.4% to 51,689, while male employment increased by 0.4% to 99,028.
The health and social work sector registered the highest increase in female employment (7.4%) while the highest increase in male employment was recorded within the transport and storage sector.
When compared to April 2011, the number of employees increased by 1.5%, or 2,027 persons.
Self-employment also increased by 0.4%, or 76 persons, reaching 17,728.
Part-time employment in April 2012 numbered 53,791 - an increase of 6.5% when compared to April 2011.
The highest increase in part-time employment was recorded within accommodation and food services activities ( 11.4%).
Persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation increased by 2,248 persons with the highest increase being recorded among females ( 1,316).
Persons who had a part-time job as their secondary job also increased by 1,025, with the highest increase being recorded among females ( 564).
