Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has declared he will "hold out hand of friendship" to the Opposition MPs after PN deputy leader Simon Busuttil expressed his opposition to Nationalist MPs occupying executive roles under a Labour administration.

Busuttil, together with Mario de Marco, Francis Zammit Dimech and Ray Bugeja, is in the running for the PN leadership. While presenting his vision to the party, Busuttil told the media that he wanted the PN in Opposition to be strong and constructive. However, he was against members of the Opposition occupying executive roles.

Reacting to this, the Prime Minister said government will not treat the Opposition as "irrelevant, despite the electoral difference".

"In line with democracy, those with a mandate to govern must respect the Opposition while putting oneself to the scrutiny of the public and his opponents. This government believes that everyone has something to contribute in a Malta for all," Muscat said.

The PM reiterated that his offer for Opposition MPs to occupy executive roles and awarded specific functions will still apply.

Nixtieq inkun naf kif Simon Busuttill fil-prezent huwa semplici Membru Parlamentari qieghed jitkellem f’isem il Group parlamentari tal-PN, meta dan il Group ghadu mhux kostitwit,(peress li ghad irridu issiru l-elezzjoniet ghall hatriet importanti fil-partit) u b’liema arroganza jghid li ma jaccettax il proposti li ghamel il-Prim Ministru sabiex jinhtru karigi ta’ chairpersons b’karigi ezekuttivi. Dan ukoll meta il-Whip David Aguis qal li bieb ghall dawn il-proposti ghadu miftuh
