'PN's abstention contrary to its stand on discrimination' - Deborah Schembri

MEP says banning gay adoption would be unconstitutional thanks to the constitutional amendement the PN unanimously approved

Labour MEP candidate Deborah Schembri said that the PN's choice to abstain from voting on the civil unions bill was contrary to its stand on discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The Opposition abstained from the civil unions vote but were unanimously in favour of a Constitutional amendment that would make discriminiation on the grounds of sexual identity illegal. Schembri called this a paradox, saying that if gay adoptions were banned, this would be considered unconstitutional by way of the newly approved amendment.

She mentioned the fact that in a press conference before the vote, leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil said that gay people could already adopt children as single parents. Schembri also said that if it were up to the PN, the civil rights debate would have dragged on indefinitely.

Schembri expressed pride at being part of the party that made such a historic step forward for civil liberties and one of the PL's most important pre-electoral promise.
