This afternoon Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne met with the executive of the Medical Association of Malta (MAM) for the first time since taking office.

The junior minister was told by MAM that while they were aware of the government's financial limits, more investment in the infrastructure and human resources was needed for the health sector to improve.

On his part, Fearne reiterated that the government's challenge was 'to go from good to great.'

"Despite having a constrained budget, we have a very good service of healthcare. This also goes down to the fact that we do not accept mediocrity or average service," Fearne said, adding that the aim should be to become a centre of excellence in healthcare.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Health noted that human resources remained one of the best assets that the government depended on.

"The government appreciates all the personal sacrifices that medical staff continuously have to do, and that is why it is the common interest to have suitable working conditions,” Fearne said.

The meeting continued behind closed doors.
