The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) today hit out at the government's “anti-democratic” behaviour over the recognition of social workers and warned that it was prepared to take all necessary action to ensure that justice is done.

The union said that it has written to government’s principle permanent secretary and requested to maintain exclusive recognition of social workers employed by the State, including those at the Karin Grech rehabilitation centre.

Noting that despite its requests, government has failed to suspend talks with another union over the representation of social workers, MUMN asked government to call off talks “since the absolute majority of social workers are enrolled with MUMN.”

Pointing out that holding negotiations with another union “did not make sense,” MUMN said “social workers are protesting against government’s actions since it is discussing with a union which they do not trust.”

It added that despite the Office of the Prime Minister’s promise to the contrary, “government slammed the door shut” and failed to discuss the matter with the union.

“MUMN is not prepared to accept the situation as it currently enjoys the support of the absolute majority of social workers,” the union said, adding that it would keep its options open to request the reopening of negotiations especially on issues that it deems unacceptable.

However, MUMN noted that it was still open to a solution to be found to the matter.
