The Malta Union of Teachers and University of Malta Academic Staff Association have announced a trade dispute with the University of Malta and the Government of Malta.

In a joint press statement, the two unions said that the action follows what they called "the needless procrastination" in the conclusion of the agreement involving academics at the University and the Junior College.

"The Unions, on request from the Government, had submitted reasonable proposals on the financial package for the collective agreement way back on 23 April," the statement read.

"Unfortunately the Unions have received no feedback whatsoever on the same proposal more than two months later, creating a deadlock in negotiations which is resulting in a needless dragging on of negotiations."

Industrial actions will come into force tomorrow, Wednesday 2 July, unless an acceptable counterproposal is received by 8am on the day.
