The abduction of Maltese oil worker Martin Galea has drawn the condemnation of the local Arab and Muslim communities.

Imam Mohammed El Sadi yesterday released a press statement, on behalf of these communities, condemning the abduction and extending sympathy to Galea's family.

"We consider this act irresponsible and unjust," the press statement said. "We call upon those responsible to release Galea to be able to return to his family safe and sound."

El Sadi reiterated the good relationship Libya shared with Malta, saying, "We are certain that this unfortunate isolated incident does not reflect the true cordial attitude of the Libyan people towards their Maltese brothers."

He expressed hope that despite the turbulence in the region and Galea's abudction, a long history of cooperation would not be compromised.
