Less work accidents this year

National Statistics Office records show a decrease of 4.5% in non-fatal accidents at work between April and June this year. No fatal accidents were recorded in this same period.

The number of reported non-fatal accidents at work between April and June of this year decreased by 4.5% when compared to the corresponding period last year.

National Statistics Office records show that 820 persons had a non-fatal accident at work in the second quarter this year. This is a decrease of 39 accidents (4.5%) when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The largest number of non-fatal accidents was registered in the manufacturing sector (22.8%). Other sectors where accidents were quite common are construction (16.8%), accommodation and food services (10.7%) and transportation and storage (10.5%). The largest share of accidents involved persons in elementary occupations and those working in crafts and related trades.

More than a quarter of non-fatal accidents at work concerned persons aged between 25 and 34.

Wounds and superficial injuries (471 cases) and dislocations, strains and sprains (193 cases) were the most common types of non-fatal accidents. When compared to the corresponding period last year, wounds and superficial injuries increased by 15%, while dislocations, strains and sprains declined by 3%. Nearly half of the non-fatal injuries at work affected the upper parts of the body, such as the fingers and hands.

Between April and June this year, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority did not report any fatal accidents at work. Two fatalities at work were reported during the same period last year
