New speed cameras on St Paul’s Bay, Xemxija bypass

Transport Malta authorises installation of new speed camera at St Paul’s Bay bypass

Transport Malta gave its ‘no objection’ to a request by the northern region’s local councils’ committee to install new speed cameras along St Paul’s Bay bypass, in measure aimed at curbing excessive speed.

TM said excessive speeding had “unfortunately become a regular occurrence at this site”, one of the longest stretches of road in Malta with no speed camera until today Thursday.

“The committee has been advocating the installation of such cameras as residents have complained of several inconvenience related to excessive speeding. TM has also taken onboard strong recommendations made during a recent traffic sitting judgement presided by Magistrate Dr. Francesco Depasquale, who urged the authority to consider the installation of a speed camera to curb overspeeding abuses along St Paul’s Bay bypass.”

Road accident statistics collated by the police and Transport Malta for the area also confirm that the bypass has witnessed quite a number of accidents, some of which fatal, due to overspeeding.

“The authority urges motorists to respect the established speed limits and reminds drivers that driving at excessive speed is extremely dangerous.”
