The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has called for more support from the EU in the wake of another migrant tragedy in the Mediterranean sea. Antonio Guterres made the appeal during a meeting with PM Joseph Muscat on the last day of his visit to Malta.

The Nationalist party has annouced its first election candidates, six men and six women, all of whom are contesting for the first time. Speaking at the end of the committee meeting that approved the candidates, PN leader Simon Busuttil said that this was proof of the party's regeneration and renewal.

Maltese Cross Financial Services Ltd had been in trouble long before its suspension by the MFSA. This newspaper reports that between 2011 and 2012 the value of the company plummeted by 32%. The MFSA suspended the company's operations on 7 August after a complaint made by clients who lost their investments with the company.

Justice minister Owen Bonnici will not resign over a traffic accident that occurred earlier this year, saying that had it been an act that eroded the public's trust in him, he would have done so immediately. Former parliamentary secretary Chris Said had resigned after being charged with perjury.
