Former Health Superintendent Ray Busuttil has been elected to the executive board of the World Health Organisation. His three-year tenure will commence in May 2015.

Busuttil will be one of 35 members on the WHO executive board. It is the first time a Maltese person will sit on this board in almost 30 years, the Health Ministry said.

“Malta and the WHO are exploring the possibility of setting up a collaborating centre for small European States in Malta,” Health Secretary Chris Fearne said, following a WHO Regional Committee meeting for Europe. In the meeting, he pointed out that the influx of migrants into Malta and conflicts in the Mediterranean are causing a strain on the Maltese health service.
