In the Press: Hunters protest closure of season, assault birdwatchers

A group of birdwatchers were assaulted and one was robbed by a number of hunters after an illegal protest in Valletta. A small group threw rocks and stole camera equipment from birdwatchers after about 200 hunters protested the early closure of the hunting season in Valletta.

PN leader Simon Busuttil yesterday proposed making 21 September Malta's only national day. Speaking at a Nationalist event at the Independence Gardens in Sliema, Busuttil said it would put into practice the unity experienced throughout this past week of celebrations.

The choice of PN candidate Ryan Mercieca has been met with indignation by the Nationalist youth movement, who warned that Mercieca might find difficulty in attaining the movement's support after, it said, he was chosen over others because of ex-minister Giovanna Debono's backing.

On the 50th anniversary of independence, President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca awarded all presidents and prime minisiters who served Independence a commemorative silver medal.
