MHRA condemns hunters’ ‘shameful’ protest

MHRA calls for swift and effective action against those responsible for Sunday's hunting protest

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA ) has condemned the protest staged yesterday by a number of hunters in Valletta and the related assaults on members of the media, calling on the authorities to “take prompt legal action against those responsible for yesterday’s actions”.

In a statement, the association described the events as “shameful” and “harmful to Malta’s well-earned reputation of being a friendly and hospitable nation”.

“Government needs to be tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime. Swift and effective action against the perpetrators must be taken,” MHRA president Matthew Pace said.

Pace added that Malta has gained a reputation amongst foreigners of being a safe place. This reputation, he said, contributed to the success of tourist arrivals recorded over the past years.

“This status cannot be taken for granted and needs to be safeguarded by all,” Pace said.

The association warned that anything that negatively impacts tourism is ultimately a threat to the whole economy and well-being of all.

“MHRA expects that the authorities take prompt legal action against those who were responsible for yesterday’s actions as these are harmful to Malta’s well- earned reputation of a friendly and hospitable nation,” Pace insisted.
