Auxiliary Bishop joins birdwatchers in Buskett

Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna condemned any sort of violence on people enjoying their hobbies during a visit to BirdLife Malta's Raptor Camp this evening, saying that "people should be able to enjoy the countryside without fear of harrasment."

Scicluna appeared captivated by the sight of flocks of roosting honey buzzards circling over Buskett during his visit and on several occasions repeated the bible verse from Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air, they want for nothing…”

Birdlife volunteers explained that the site was also recently the scene of an attack by hunters on a group of bird watchers. The bishop said that it is unfortunate that on the 50th anniversary of Independence, "Maltese can organise an ambush on other Maltese,"  and urged all people to “observe the law, as it is for the good of all”.

This was the Bishop’s first bird-watching experience. “It is extraordinary to see a living creature that was recently in Asia or Scandinavia, now flying over Malta” he remarked, adding that he hoped to see them again when they return come springtime.

Scicluna thanked BirdLife for the opportunity and encouraged all people to “appreciate nature as God gave it to them- a gift”.

He expressed his hopes that the Maltese people will take care of nature and obey the law in pursuing their hobbies.
